Five top tips

Five top tips to help you manage your online privacy.

1. Don’t panic

Companies use this website, and the tools we provide, to help ensure that interest-based advertising is safe and transparent. Interest-based advertising is based on your browsing activity to deliver advertising that reflects inferred interests. Take a moment to learn more about interest-based advertising.

2. Look for the icon on the websites you’re visiting

Many of the advertisements on the websites that you’re visiting will have the “AdChoices Icon” embedded within them (see the example below). By clicking on this icon you can find out more details about the information collected and used, as well as ways to manage or control it.

3. Make a choice about whether you want Interest-based advertising or not

Companies serving Interest-based advertising will also provide you with more information about how to decline interest-based advertising. Opt out of interest-based advertising.

4. Get a bit more familiar with the privacy settings on your computer

These can be found in the ‘options’ menu of your browser. When selecting options relating to cookies, remember, that they often make websites a bit more user-friendly (for example, remembering site preferences and language settings).

5. Try and tailor these privacy settings to suit your household’s needs.

Everybody uses the internet in different ways and for varying purposes. In households where more than one person uses the same computer, we suggest that each user has their own ‘user account’. This allows privacy settings (for example cookie settings or opt out preferences) to be tailored to the needs and requirements of each user.
